I’d say the most important thing to be happy in any job is having intrinsic motivation for it. I often quote Daniel H. Pink’s motivation mantra, but here we go again, you need three things in your job to be motivated: autonomy, purpose and mastery. So you have to be able to direct your own way of working, you have to see some goal you’re going for and then you have to be able to perfect your skills and learn more. These are not very hard criteria to fill as an entrepreneur.

Malcolm Gladwell quips in Outliers...

"Those three things – autonomy, complexity, and a connection between effort and reward — are, most people agree, the three qualities that work has to have if it is to be satisfying."

Jonathan: My favorite of the moment is the the kinetic typography video that Jared Heather made:. It's just an incredible piece of work. The theater department at Boston College created and staged a musical called Code Monkey made up of a lot of my songs, that was kind of awe inspiring to watch. A guy named Spiff makes great World of Warcraft music videos music videos for my songs (and other people's songs). And recently I was listening again to a remix of Code Monkey done by Kristen Shirts. She won a remix contest with a version that I liked so much, it changed the way I play the song live . It also led to her playing ukulele at shows with me a few times. There are a lot of others I'm forgetting now I'm sure.

From Drop bear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Escape Velocity Nova, an Australian-designed 2002 computer game from Ambrosia Software, contains attacks from alleged drop bears in Auroran Empire space. These drop bears are actually young Auroran warriors in disguise. The game also features drop bear attacks and repellents. Purchase of the repellent, which cannot subsequently be discarded, dramatically increases the rate of drop bear attacks.

He calculates that illegal immigrants contributed $428 billion dollars to the nation's $13.6 trillion gross domestic product in 2006. That number assumes illegal immigrants are 30 percent less productive than other workers.

The Social Security Administration estimates that about three-quarters of illegal workers pay taxes that contribute to the overall solvency of Social Security and Medicare.

"Overall, any type of immigration is a net positive to Social Security. The more people working and paying into the system, the better," Hinkle said. "It does help the system remain solvent."

There are a few books I recommend to kids just starting out in the industry.

Code Complete Writing Solid Code Programming Pearls and The Practice of Programming

Even old stalwarts like Kernighan's The C Programming Language aren't as useful in the longterm as the 4 books above are.

Anyone who wants to make the jump from "code monkey" to professional should really take the time to read the books.

Obama urges Mideast leaders on peace

Have a look at the video documentary called "Peace, Propaganda and Promised Land" by Media Education Foundation (mediaed.org) or at google video.

It's an interesting video on the media, lobbyists and inaccurate reporting. It specifically focuses on Israeli lobby groups and their influence on some American media outlets and the lack of balance this creates in reporting both sides of the issue (the occupation of Palestine).

Feynman's Rant on Social Science

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature... Life is either a daring adventure or nothing." -- Helen Keller

the classical Rowan Atkinson sketch

...well over half of the time you spend working on a project (on the order of 70 percent) is spent thinking, and no tool, no matter how advanced, can think for you. Consequently, even if a tool did everything except the thinking for you -- if it wrote 100 percent of the code, wrote 100 percent of the documentation, did 100 percent of the testing, burned the CD-ROMs, put them in boxes, and mailed them to your customers -- the best you could hope for would be a 30 percent improvement in productivity. In order to do better than that, you have to change the way you think.

In an ideal world, we would all be better off if either A) all information was private, or B) all information was public. Turns out, some people have information they don't wish to share (for a list of reasons which includes every human motivation) so the GPL lacks universal appeal. Turns out, some people have information which they don't wish other people not to share, so neither does the BSD license have universal appeal.

I don't know who this "The Flash" is... But this reminds me of some odd invoices I've seen here lately at Star Labs. Someone special-ordered a custom keyboard rated to one hundred times the usual keystroke impact, an 80MHz keyboard controller, and a built-in 1MiB keystroke buffer. Pretty ridiculous, huh? The usual 10ms polling rate for a USB keyboard should be enough for anybody - no need for all that fancy junk.

Prince of Space all (Score:2) by aredubya74 (266988) on Tuesday November 11, @01:16PM (#25723531)

Yes, even better than Manos. Manos is more horrible to behold, but Prince of Space is funny from start to finish, and hits every key sci-fi demo - B&W, bad SFX, awkward costuming, dubbed from Japanese to some weird form of Brooklyn tough guy accent ("I like it VERY MUCH!"), great callbacks (Krankor's laugh, "your weapons are useless against me", bumbling scientists). It was a cinematic goldmine, ably plundered by Mike and the Bots.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape_Torment

It has some issues(for one, finding a legitimate copy). There were some bugs in the final shipped version and it's not supported anymore, but fans have fixed a few more of the bugs and have a patch available(linked in the wikipedia article, reference 9).
