SettingUpAWindowsMachine

There are some things I like to do with a new Windows box to make it feel more like "home". Do anything you like with these except imply or state that they're yours.

UNIX Commands (cp, ls, mv, rm)

  • These are batch files that are very tiny wrappers around the DOS commands. No cygwin, mingwin or other software is needed. Path names still have to be in Windows form.
  • unix-cmd-utils.zip
  • Put these in a directory like "C:\command\" and put that in the path.

Misc Commands (these must be in C:\command\)

  • misc-cmd-utils.zip
  • e
    • Opens an Explorer window at the current path (as a background job)
  • Command Prompt Here
    • Create a shortcut to this batch file in your C:\Documents and Settings\ProfileName\SendTo directory. Then you can right-click on any directory in Windows Explorer, use the "Send To" menu and click "Command Prompt Here".
  • hold
    • Creates a batch file called "C:\command\last.bat" which will cd to the current directory (helpful when adding things to the path or environment, and having to close the existing shell window and create another one)

Command Prompt Here (a Ruby version which supports UNC paths)
