To perform a glyph hack, tap and hold the "Hack" button on the portal screen for a few seconds instead of just tapping it. The glyphs almost always come in a sequence that makes some sort of sense. If you know the real names for the glyphs it will help you to remember the sequence. If you have an Android device, you can also get more experience by playing Glypher.
